I’m a Realtor, homeowner, mom, grandmother, and a woman in my 60s who has learned that loving where you live has a lot less to do with having the perfect house and a lot more to do with creating a home that works for the life you’re actually living.
That’s what Home Joy by Denise is about.
I love a beautiful room, but I don’t live in a magazine. I believe you can make an everyday home feel warm, comfortable and pulled together without replacing everything you own or spending a fortune.

Our homes don’t stay the same because our lives don’t stay the same.
Kids grow up. Families change. Parents get older. We accumulate too much stuff. Our needs change. And rooms that worked perfectly ten years ago may not work for us today.
Sometimes we’re simply decorating for a new season. Other times we’re entering an entirely new season of life.
I’ve learned that getting rid of everything isn’t always the answer.
Sometimes that old piece of furniture has a story. Sometimes Grandma’s dishes matter because of the memories attached to them. And sometimes it’s perfectly okay to say, “I don’t need this anymore,” and let it go.
Home Joy is about finding that balance between keeping what matters and making room for what comes next.
A Beautiful Home Should Also Work for You
I live with a visual impairment, so I understand personally that a home needs to be functional as well as beautiful.
Good lighting, furniture placement, clear pathways, organization and thoughtful choices can make a tremendous difference in how comfortably and independently someone can use their home.
That perspective will be woven naturally throughout Home Joy. Whether someone is living with a disability, experiencing changing mobility, helping an aging parent, or simply trying to make everyday life easier, I believe our homes should work for the people who live in them.
Accessibility and good design don’t have to be two different things.
Decorating Doesn’t Have to Mean Starting Over
You won’t find a requirement here for a designer kitchen or a picture-perfect house.
I want to share home decorating ideas that feel attainable for everyday homes and everyday budgets.
That might mean adding warm textures to your living room for fall, changing a few colors for Christmas, finding an affordable piece of decor, organizing a pantry, improving the lighting in a room or simply moving the furniture around and realizing the space works better.
Sometimes a few small changes are enough to make you enjoy your home again.

I’m Denise Hernandez, a Southern California Realtor based in Menifee, California, with a special interest in helping people navigate downsizing, relocation and 55+ living.
Working in real estate has given me a front-row seat to how our homes change along with our lives.
I’ve watched people buy their first homes, leave houses filled with decades of memories, simplify their lives, move closer to family and begin completely new chapters.
I’m going through my own next chapter too.
And I’ve discovered that there can be a lot of joy in figuring out what stays, what goes, what changes and what comes next.
